Raising cattle can be problematic if you love animals like we do. I would not be telling the truth if I said that it doesn't bother me to tend to our livestock everyday knowing what the end game will be. The way we compensate for this feeling is to do our best at providing our cattle with the best life we can give them for the time we have them. We make sure our cattle are safe, healthy, and that all their needs are met. I frequently feed them cubes (which is a real treat for them) and Kathy's favorite thing to do on the ranch is to hand feed her cattle, especially the calves.
So on the ranch the cattle stay happy. It is important that when the day comes and the animal has to be slaughtered that it does not know whats coming. The processor we use is a small family owned business that dispatches the animal without it knowing what is happening.
Compare that to the normal meat packer where the cattle are lined up and pushed down a chute with the smell of death right in front of them. Besides being inhumane there has been extensive studies that confirm the meat from terrorized cattle is inferior to cattle that die peacefully.
