Everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to what constitutes the most delicious tasting beef. Some insist grass fed taste better while some insist grain fed beef is the best. Also, there has been a lot written about the health benefits of grass fed beef over its grain fed counterpart. Please allow me to briefly discuss our take on this matter freely admitting that in my opinion there is no comparison to the texture and taste of grain finished beef.
If you think you prefer the taste of grass finished beef there is probably nothing I can say that will change your mind. But consider this. The rich flavor of a delicious steak comes from the marbling and the trimmed fat that surrounds it. Grass finished beef usually contains less marbling/fat which results in a tougher, less flavorful piece of meat. It’s my opinion that the taste and texture of today’s retail beef has become so dismal that the consumer has forgotten what a treat it is to taste a dry aged, grain fed steak that will melt in your mouth, a flavorful roast, and the tastiest hamburger meat.
As for the health benefits of grass fed beef it does appears to me that it is slightly healthier for you than grain fed. The primary reason seems to be a higher level of omega-3 fatty acids that are found in grass fed. Unbiased studies indicate these benefits grow inconsequential if a healthy lifestyle is maintained. At Cliftons Farms we grass feed our cattle but we then grain finish them to supply what we think is the necessary marbling to give you that savory taste and texture. It’s up to you to decide.
